GHG Emissions

In 2017, Concord voted to align its goals with the Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act of 2008 and the Paris Climate Accord to achieve a minimum 25% town-wide reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2020 and an 80% reduction by 2050 from a 2008 baseline.

Concord's GHG inventory report calculates community-wide emissions for the years 2008 and 2016 and establishes a methodology that can be replicated in subsequent years to track progress toward our emission reduction goals.

Concord's GHG emissions decreased by 6% from 2008 to 2016.

The emissions decrease was largely driven by:
  • Increased renewable generation
  • Lower emitting sources of electricity
  • A decrease in electricity use in the commercial sector
  • More efficiency energy use in homes
From the 2008 baseline:
  • Electricity emissions decreased by 26%
  • #2 Fuel Oil emissions decreased by 19%
  • All other sources of emissions increased

We have a long way to go to reach our GHG reduction goals. 

In 2016, 60% of Concord's emissions came from buildings, 37% from transportation, and 3% from waste.

In 2019, we also completed a wedge analysis to analyze the emissions reduction potential of 5 actions - changes to vehicles standards, electric vehicle incentives, air-source heat pump incentives, energy efficient buildings, and zero carbon electricity. Combined, these actions could reduce our community-wide emissions by 35% of more. Download the full report.
