[ARCHIVED] DPH Elevates EEE Risk Level to High

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced today it is raising the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) risk levels to high in Concord in Middlesex County due to two EEE-positive mosquito findings in species known to be able to spread the virus to humans. This is an expansion of an area already considered to be at high risk from EEE.

It is imperative that the public remain vigilant and that Concord residents take precautions and avoid contact with mosquitoes:

  • Avoid outside areas with obvious mosquito activity
  • Use CDC recommended insect repellent anytime outdoors: Preventing Mosquito Bites | Mosquitoes | CDC
  • Wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks
  • Limit outdoor activities to the extent possible
  • Remove standing water where mosquitoes can breed
  • Repair window screens- keep mosquitoes out

Concord took the additional measure of spraying on Thursday, September 12, 2024 in two locations:

  • Emerson Field, 90 Stow Street
  • Rideout Playground, 61 Laws Brook Road

The Board of Health has posted an emergency meeting on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024 at 7 PM via Zoom to take up the authorization of a waiver to conduct pesticide spraying for mosquitos on school property as well as other measures, such as the restriction of outdoor activities.

More information, including all WNV and EEE positive results, can be found on the Arbovirus Surveillance Information web page at Mosquito-borne Diseases | Mass.gov which is updated daily, or by calling the DPH Division of Epidemiology at 617-983-6800.
