Community Celebrations

The West Concord Junction Cultural District Committee hosts activities and participates in many community celebrations like Discover West Concord Day, Spring into West Concord Day, and Art Week.

  • In 2018, the WCJCDC arranged an Open Studios in collaboration with the artists of ArtScape and 152 Commonwealth Ave, organized a tent area with displays from various groups including the Fowler Library, Marx Fencing Academy, Lincoln Physicians, and the West Concord Advisory Committee, and held three outdoor musical concerts.
  • In 2019, the WCJCDC organized a series of events including a free bluegrass concert at Three Stones Gallery; two free art-making parties at Village Art Room and Nashoba Bakery; a bluegrass literature display at the Fowler Library; a bluegrass-themed flavor, Fingerpicking Good Bourbon, at Reasons to Be Cheerful; and a bluegrass-themed drink (Ben's Banjo) at Salt Box Kitchen. The Concord Conservatory of Music hosted a free bluegrass lecture and bluegrass concert with members of the community. The concert also served as the "reveal" for the "Art Scramble 1: Music in the Village" mural.
  • In 2019, local musicians performed bluegrass music at the WCJCDC's "West Concord Goes Bluegrass" event held at Concord Conservatory of Music.
  • In November, 2019, WCJCDC supported local businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving by serving hot chocolate to passersby in front of storefronts on Main Street and Commonwealth Avenue and hiring a Santa Claus to hand out candy and encourage patrons into the stores.
  • In 2020, we create a series of tributes to our local 5&10, a beloved store, landmark and cultural icon in our district that closed after 85 years in business. Our effort was three-pronged: (1) We organized an extensive car parade to pass by the store on its last day that included police, fire, and ambulance vehicles as well as numerous local residents. (2) We created a postcard tribute that involved designing, printing, and handing out postcards on which community members wrote about their favorite memory of the 5&10. We then installed the postcards in the store's window for all to read. (3) With the help of local cable outlet, Minuteman Media Network, we helped create a 30-minute long tribute video of the store, its proprietor Maynard Forbes, and the Village itself that was then distributed to the community at large.
  •  In 2021, members of the WCJCDC collaborated with local businesses and other groups such as the Green Thumbs, to create a Scavenger Hunt in local businesses advertised as "Spring into West Concord". With activities for all ages available, families had the opportunity to explore businesses and the art scene in West Concord over the weeklong event.
