2026 Town Caucus

Caucus Procedure

The Town of Concord holds an annual Town Caucus according to the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 53, Sections 117 & 118 for the purpose of nominating candidates for the Annual Town Election.  The Caucus procedure is described in MGL c. 53, section 121 as follows:

  • If more than one person is nominated for a seat, the two persons receiving the highest number of votes cast shall be declared nominated for such office by this Caucus.
  • If the voting results in a tie vote among candidates receiving the smallest number of votes, which but for the tie vote, would entitle a person receiving such number to appear as a nominee, all candidates participating in such tie vote shall be nominees.
  • If a person receives less than 8% of the votes of those voting for nominees, he or she shall not be declared nominated.

The following rule has traditionally been voted by the Caucus:

If the number of persons nominated as candidates for an office does not exceed twice the number of persons to be elected to such office, the Chair shall, unless there is a request from a voter at the Caucus that a ballot be taken, declare such persons to be the nominees of the Caucus for such office.

Other ways to get your name on the ballot

Nomination papers for the annual town elections are available in January from the Town Clerk's Office if you would like to run but are not or do not wish to pursue being nominated at the Town Caucus.  Signatures of at least 50 voters are required on nomination papers to have a candidate's name added to the ballot. The deadline to return nomination papers is 5:00 pm on Tuesday February 18, 2025.

If you've missed the Caucus and Nomination Paper deadline, you may still run a write-in campaign.
